Reissuing and recycling of wheelchairs

A recent tweet showing pictures of wheelchairs by, and in, a skip outside our Kent and Medway wheelchair service centre garnered a lot of interest.

Whilst we responded at the time, our responses were drowned out by other comments and we would like to reiterate our stance on the reissuing and recycling of wheelchairs.

Any wheelchairs that can be reissued are recycled within the contract. Any that do not meet standards are sent for charity re-distribution. Chairs are only scrapped, after any safe spare parts are salvaged, if they cannot be recycled, and may put users’ safety at risk.

Where we can, we split the wheelchairs between two charities, where they’ll make their way to various destinations around the world. Here, they’ll make a profound difference to a number of people’s lives. The rest will be recycled through our contractor.

We would like to invite you to visit the service centre to see how it all works. To arrange a visit, please contact us on 0330 124 4485.
